Achievement: 4th Place GEMASTIK XVIII 2025 – Software Development Category

My journey in GEMASTIK XVIII 2025, where I secured the 4th place in the Software Development category.

GEMASTIK (Pagelaran Mahasiswa Nasional Bidang Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi) is a prestigious national scientific competition in Indonesia, where students from various universities compete in different categories. In GEMASTIK XVIII 2025, I participated in the Software Development category and secured the 4th place.

My team consisted of two members, my teammate is one of my close friend, his name is Alwan, you gotta check his profile on LinkedIn. He is a great Flutter Developer.

And our mentor is Sir Alfhi, he is a great mentor, he guided us throughout the competition and provided valuable insights and feedback on our project. He also helped us to improve our presentation skills and prepare for the final round of the competition.

Our Mentor, Pak Alfhi

Our project was TemanNelayan (Manela). It was a mobile application that aimed to solve a fishermen’s problem. We developed an app that helps fishermen to find the best fishing spots based on weather conditions, sea temperature, ocean depth, and other relevant data.

Manela App

I’m gonna tell you about the process of developing this app. We started by identifying the problem that fishermen face, which is finding the best fishing spots. We then gathered data from various sources, such as weather forecasts, sea temperature, and ocean depth. We used this data to create an algorithm that predicts the best fishing spots based on the current conditions.

Problem Identification and Ideation

At first we didn’t even know that we will goes into this “fisherman problem.” We started with the main theme of GEMASTIK XVIII 2025, which was:

“Pengembangan TIK untuk Mendukung Kemandirian Bangsa.” Kemandirian bangsa yang dimaksud bisa meliputi dan tidak terbatas pada bidang: swasembada pangan, energi, air, ekonomi kreatif, ekonomi hijau dan ekonomi biru.

or in English:

“ICT Development to Support National Independence.” The independence of the nation can include but is not limited to the fields of: food self-sufficiency, energy, water, creative economy, green economy and blue economy.

So then we researched so many topics about food self-sufficiency, energy, water, creative economy, green economy and blue economy. We were interested in the blue economy, which is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystem. We then identified that one of the problems that fishermen face is finding the best fishing spots. This problem is crucial because it directly affects their livelihood and income.

Problem and Solution Specification

After a discussion with our mentor. We decided to focus more on the problem of helping the fishermen find the best fishing spots and many other aspects of their daily work, rather than “preserving the health of ocean ecosystem.” Cause we thought that was too broad and we didn’t have enough time to do that.

Data Collection and Algorithm Development

We then gathered data from various sources, such as weather forecasts, sea temperature, and ocean depth. We used this data to create an algorithm that predicts the best fishing spots based on the current conditions. We also incorporated user feedback and suggestions to improve the algorithm and make it more accurate.

data sample from the dataset that we used:

Nolat (°)long (°)sst(°C)chl(mg/m³)depth (m)
1-5.1234119.456728.70.29150
2-4.9876119.678929.20.2580
3-6.2345120.345627.80.3245
4-5.8765118.987630.10.18900
5-6.5432121.123428.50.301000

and the visualized data:

Satellite Data

We got the data from various sources, such as weather forecasts, sea temperature, and ocean depth. Like from NOAA, Google Earth Engine, Indonesian Bathymetry Data, and so on!

Proposal and App Development

After we developed the algorithm, we then created a proposal that outlined our problem, solution, and the technical details of our app. We also developed a mobile application that implemented our algorithm. Still, shoutout to Alwan for developing the app prototype in less than 2 weeks, I just helped him with the algorithm and the proposal. The app was developed using Flutter, which is a cross-platform mobile application development framework.

The first proposal is not that good, but it’s not bad too. Here if you’re interested to read it: Link to the first proposal

Internal Selection

Before competing in elimination round in GEMASTIK, we had to submit the proposal and the app to the internal selection of BINUS School of Computer Science. Why? Because so many people from BINUS SoCS wants to compete in GEMASTIK. So we had to compete with them first.

The timeline was really tight, we had to submit the proposal and the app in less than 2 weeks. We had to work really hard to finish the proposal and the app in time. We had to do a lot of research, data collection, algorithm development, and app development in such a short time.

Anddd Deo Gratias! We got selected to represent BINUS SoCS in GEMASTIK XVIII 2025 with other 9 selected teams from SoCS.

Elimination Round

In this elimination round, we only needed to submit the proposal, app, and a short video explaining our project. We had to compete with other teams from all over Indonesia. In the time that we had from the internal selection until the elimination round, we had to improve our proposal and our app. We had to make sure that our proposal was clear, concise, and convincing. We also had to make sure that our app was functional, user-friendly, and visually appealing.

Thank God we got selected to go to the final round of GEMASTIK XVIII 2025. We were really happy and proud of our achievement. We were also really grateful to our mentor, Sir Alfhi, for his guidance and support throughout the competition.

Elimination Round

hahaha yes, our team name was “is3nG aJ4H,” or in english, it was “Just messing around.” We just wanted to have fun and didn’t think to make it this far 😅😅

Final Round

In this final round, we have so MANY submissions to do. We had to prepare a lot of things, such as the final proposal, paper, the final app, the final presentation, and the final video. We have to practice for the presentation and also prepare for the Q&A session.

We ask for many feedback from our mentor, Sir Alfhi, and also from other people, such as our friends, family, and even strangers. We want to make sure that our final report, paper, app, presentation, and video are the best that they can be. We want to make sure that we can impress the judges and the audience with our project.

Asking for Feedback from Strangers
Yes, we even asked for feedback from real fisherman on the shore, hahaha. We just wanted to make sure that our project was good and could be understood by real fisherman⛵.

And we also tested our app on the sea with real fisherman. We went to the shore and asked the fisherman to try our app and give us feedback!

And here is the final video that we submitted for the final round:

Winner Announcement and Reflection

After the final presentation, we had to wait for the announcement of the winners. We were really nervous and anxious. We didn’t know if we would win or not. We just hoped that we could do our best.

And then, the announcement came. We got the 4th place in the Software Development category! We were really happy and proud of our achievement. We were also really grateful to our mentor, Sir Alfhi, for his guidance and support throughout the competition. I also want to thank our teammate, Alwan, for his hard work and dedication in developing the app.

Conclusion

Overall, participating in GEMASTIK XVIII 2025 was a great experience for me. I learned a lot about problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills. I’m really grateful for this experience and I hope to participate in GEMASTIK again in the future!
